In the realm of personal growth and self-improvement, utilizing therapy has been popularized over the last several decades. However, a compelling shift has emerged in recent years, with coaching stepping into the spotlight as an incredible alternative.

Just five short years ago I hardly knew what coaching was, and now I can’t imagine my life without a coach. Not only that, but I’m a coach myself, so I see the impact coaching has not only on my own life but also on my clients’ lives.

Best Alternative To Therapy

I’ve had experience with both a therapist and a coach, and they’re completely different and valuable in their own unique ways.

What I see lacking is the awareness around how coaching is one of the best (and in my opinion, the best) alternatives to therapy.

Coaching Compared To Therapy

Therapy is typically diagnostic, past-focused, and helpful for areas such as trauma, childhood and family dynamics, and depression.

Coaching, on the other hand, can be helpful for everyday challenges, like yelling at your kids, decreasing overwhelm, increasing connection with your spouse, making better decisions, and increasing overall life happiness.

I think of therapy as helpful for getting you from dysfunctional to functional and coaching as helpful for getting you from functional to exceptional.

Many of my clients have described coaching as an alternative to therapy they didn’t know existed.

Benefits of Coaching Over Therapy

There are so many benefits of coaching over therapy. If you are doing fine in your life, and you don’t really need a therapist, coaching can be an incredible tool to help you improve your overall satisfaction in life.

For many of my clients, their lives look amazing on the outside; there’s nothing “wrong” and yet they don’t feel that they’re happy on the inside. This is where coaching comes in.

Your brain is wired for survival; it’s not wired for happiness. Because of this, coaching is a tool to help you manage your brain so that you can wire it for more connection, joy, and fulfillment. I.e.: coaching is a space where you can cultivate more happiness in your life.

I truly believe if you have a healthy human brain, you need a coach. I don’t think I’m the coach for everyone, but I do believe that everyone benefits from a really amazing coach.

When Coaching Works Best

Coaching works best for everyday challenges, where therapy falls short.

For example, if you have childhood trauma to work through, coaching with me isn’t a good fit because I’m not trained in that area. Therapy (and other medical and professional resources) work best for mental health disorders. However, if you are fighting with your in-laws, yelling at your kids, or feeling completely overwhelmed, I can help. These every day challenges of modern motherhood are exactly where coaching works best.

I remember when I “graduated” from therapy after a really tough breakup in my twenties. There was nothing left to do. That’s when I found coaching. It became a space for me to develop myself and add incredibly helpful tools to my tool belt to help me live a better life.

Ultimately, coaching works best for every day challenges of modern motherhood. It’s a space to get access to mental and emotional wellness tools to help you overcome challenges and live your best life.

Coaching And Mental Health

The coaching tools I’m trained in take psychology theory and make them applicable to daily challenges. You can reduce anxiety, for example, by taking a look at your negative thoughts and replacing them with different, better feeling thoughts.

However, if you are struggling with issues that require therapeutic intervention—such as severe general anxiety disorder, depression, or unresolved trauma—that is when seeking a mental health professional is best.

Coaching and therapy can work hand in hand. Knowing what stage of life you’re in and what tools will work best for you is a personal choice. Often, I’ll have clients who have therapists and utilize coaching tools supplementally, because they know the power of working on your thoughts and feelings provides an added benefit.

How To Choose Between Coaching And Therapy

If you know for sure you have a medical disorder, seek professional help.

Aside from that, choosing between coaching and therapy might not be necessary. Instead, you might think of therapy like going to the doctor and coaching like going to the gym. You can always have a gym membership and exercise to take care of your body. In the same way, you can always have a coaching membership to take care of your mental and emotional health. Then, you can add in therapy (the doctor in this analogy) on an as-needed basis.

Coaching in the way I’ve created it for my clients is not only transformational, but it’s also affordable. For just $87/month you get access to over $1,700+ worth of value that you can use as much or as little as you want. It’s the ultimate space to become the mom you want to be, from the inside out.

How To Find A Good Coach For You

I’m a causal coach, which means I help you get to the root cause of your challenges and solve them in the way that best suits you—based on your values, circumstances, and life.

I have extensive training in both the brain (identifying thought patterns that cause anxiety, overthinking, etc.) and body (feelings of overwhelm, resentment, frustration, rage, and more). My training has enabled me to apply psychology theory via tools to help you transform your life.

I’ve coached thousands of clients in my Mom On Purpose Membership as well as privately in a 1:1 setting.
